Abstract

Corticosteroid-induced diabetes is defined as a glycemic rise in resulting from glucocorticoid therapy. Its prevalence is increasing in clinical practice due to the widespread use of these medications for a broad range of conditions, particularly inflammatory diseases. Hyperglycemia typically occurs from midday onwards and in the evening, while fasting blood glucose levels are often normal in the morning. International guidelines recommend regular glucose monitoring and the prompt and appropriate management of hyperglycemia. The choice of the insulin regimen depends on the specific glucocorticoid being used, as these agents affect the glycemic profile differently. In Switzerland, NPH insulin is most commonly prescribed. It is essential to systematically screen patients receiving glucocorticoids for hyperglycemia and to provide timely treatment to prevent long-term complications.
