Abstract

Following a request from the European Commission, EFSA was asked to deliver a scientific opinion on the assessment of the application for the renewal of the authorisation of l-threonine produced with a genetically modified strain Escherichia coli CGMCC 7.58 as a nutritional feed additive for all animal species. The applicant has provided evidence that the additive currently in the market complies with the existing conditions of authorisation. There was no new evidence that would lead the EFSA Panel on Additives and Products or Substances used in Animal Feed (FEEDAP) to reconsider its previous conclusions. Thus, the FEEDAP Panel concludes that the additive remains safe under the proposed conditions of use in feed for the target species, consumers and the environment. The FEEDAP Panel has concerns on the use of l-threonine in water for drinking. Regarding the user safety, the additive is not irritant to skin or eyes. In the absence of data, the Panel is not in the position to conclude on the skin sensitisation of the additive. The present application for renewal of the authorisation does not include any modification proposal that would have an impact on the efficacy of the additive and therefore there is no need for re-assessing the efficacy.
