Short Biography

Prof. Abdel-Moneim is the founder of the World Society for Virology . He currently serves as Professor of Virology in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, College of Medicine and Health Sciences, Sultan Qaboos University (SQU), Oman since 1 March 2025. He previously served for 15 years as Professor of Virology at the College of Medicine, Taif University, Saudi Arabia, and also holds a professorship at Beni-Suef University, Egypt.

With a research career spanning more than two decades, Prof. Abdel-Moneim has made sustained contributions to the study of viral diseases affecting humans and animals. He has authored more than 140 peer-reviewed publications. His postdoctoral training was conducted at the Friedrich Loeffler Institute (Insel Riems), Greifswald, Germany, where he worked on advanced viral cloning strategies using baculovirus–mammalian expression systems.

Prof. Abdel-Moneim has significantly contributed to understanding the molecular evolution and epidemiology of avian influenza viruses (notably H5N1, H7, and H9) and infectious bronchitis virus in Egypt. His team was the first to report H5N1 influenza virus in equine species and documented the widespread circulation of H7 and H9 viruses in the country.

During his tenure at Taif University, he led studies on the molecular diagnosis and surveillance of viral diseases, contributing first reports of human bocavirus, respiratory syncytial virus, rotavirus, and influenza viruses in both Saudi Arabia and Egypt. His work has also explored the potential link between human bocavirus and colorectal cancer, as well as its implications for blood transfusion safety.

In the area of pathogen–host interaction, his team reported a high spontaneous clearance rate of HCV in Saudi nationals and investigated the role of platelets in the progression of liver cirrhosis in schistosomiasis and hepatitis C and as well as clinical and studies on SARS-CoV-2.

Prof. Abdel-Moneim serves on the editorial boards of several international journals including Virology, npj Viruses , PLOS One, Beni-Suef J of Basic and Applied Research and acts regularly as an ad hoc reviewer for leading peer-reviewed journals. He is an active member of multiple virology societies and has supervised numerous predoctoral and postdoctoral researchers. Through founding the World Society for Virology, he has played a central role in promoting global collaboration, capacity building, and policy-relevant dialogue within the international virology community.
