Short Biography

A scientist with an impressive tenure of over 20 years, I have devoted my career to the intersection of microbiology, molecular biology, next-generation sequencing (NGS), and bioinformatics, focusing on groundbreaking applications in public health, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and personalized medicine. With my educational foundation rooted in a Ph.D. in Medical Sciences, MA in Bioethics, and dual master's degrees in Biology and Microbiology, my passion for continuous learning is further complemented by multiple certifications in AI, NGS, and bioinformatics. Currently as a Senior Scientific Research Scientist at University Medical Center Groningen, where I contribute to the EU project DRAIGON, which represents a pioneering fusion of AI and genomic data to anticipate patterns of antimicrobial resistance. My scholarly endeavors have culminated in numerous publications, a patent, and a suite of grants and scholarships that underscore my commitment to scientific excellence. At the core of my professional mission is the ambition to harness the power of NGS technologies to revolutionize diagnostic techniques for multi-drug-resistant pathogens and to inform decisions in therapeutics - all while seeking out avant-garde methodologies to stem the tide of AMR globally. The amalgamation of my diverse skills in NGS, AMR, molecular biology, microbiology and bioinformatics are not only paramount in advancing our institutional capabilities but are essential to persevering in the global fight against antibiotic resistance. I am constantly striving to protect public health and ensure the well-being of diverse communities around the world. Highlight: "Basil Britto Xavier is a leading molecular microbiologist and genomics researcher specializing in antimicrobial resistance (AMR). He is internationally recognized for the landmark discovery of the mcr-2 colistin resistance gene and the vanP vancomycin resistance gene in Enterococcus. His seminal work on Nitrofurantoin resistance mechanisms and the development of the pLIN (Plasmid Lineage) classification system has transformed high-resolution pathogen tracking. Currently based at the University of Antwerp, his research integrates NGS, AI, and molecular biology to develop next-generation diagnostics for global health."
