Brian Borsari

Brian Borsari received his PhD in clinical psychology from Syracuse University in 2003 following his completion of an internship at the Boston Consortium of Clinical Psychology. In 2005, he completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Center for Alcohol and Addiction Studies at Brown University and transitions to faculty there. In 2007, Dr. Borsari then became a staff psychologist in the Posttraumatic Stress Disorders (PTSD) Clinic then joined the Providence Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC). Since 2015, Dr. Borsari has been a Psychologist Clinician Investigator at the San Francisco VA and is also Professor in Residence in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of California, San Francisco. He has been continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health, Department of Defense, VA RR&D and other funding sources since 2001. He has published over 215 peer reviewed articles over the past 25 years on topics such as alcohol use in university settings, the assessment and treatment of addictive behaviors, in-session processes of motivational interviewing that are related to behavior change, the development and implementation of brief motivational interventions addressing a variety of target behaviors in a number of different populations, and the development and evaluation of motivational interventions using mobile technology such as chatbots and apps. Dr. Borsari also serves as a Field Editor at the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs and is on the editorial board of Psychology of Addictive Behaviors. Since 2023, Dr. Borsari has served as the Deputy Director of the Addiction Recovery and Treatment Service and delivers a variety of empirically based treatments to veterans with substance use disorders and co-morbid mental health conditions such as PTSD.
