Short Biography

Prof Carlo Di Mario is Professor of Cardiology

at the University of Florence and Director of the

Structural

Interventional Cardiology Division of

the University Hospital Careggi, Florence, Italy.

He is still clinically active in London where he

holds GMC registration and offers consultations

in the Royal Brompton Hospital and PCI/TAVI in

the Harley Street Clinic. Previous posts

included 15 years as

Professor of Clinical

Cardiology at Imperial College of Sciences,

Medicine & Technology, London and

Consultant Cardiologist at

the Royal Brompton

Hospital. He also practiced at the San

Raffaele

University Hospital, Milan, Italy. He trained in

Cardiology at the University of Padova, Italy,

but he soon moved for interventional training at

the Thoraxcentre of Rotterdam, the

Netherlands, where he also completed a PhD in

Intracoronary Ultrasound Imaging and Doppler.

CLINICAL EXPERIENCE: Despite his

teaching, research and administrative

commitments, he maintains an active clinical

involvement performing more than 100 PCI per

year with special interest in the treatment of

calcified lesions, chronic total occlusions,

bifurcations, and diffuse disease. He is a

regular TAVI operator and certified implanter for

the self expanding Medtronic Evolut R Pro+ and

Boston Scientific Acurate Pro valves and the

balloon expandable Edwards Sapien 3 Ultra

Plus Resilia and MyVal Octacor Plus

transcatheter aortic valves. He participated in

more than 250 MitraClip, TriClip and PASCAL

implantations in London and Florence. He was

the first implanter of PTFE covered stents in

1996, pioneered the use of novel stents and

drug eluting stents, of carotid filters with Gary

Roubin in 1997, of the Prostar/Perclose closure

device with John Simpson in 1999, of the left

atrial appendage closure device PLATO in

2001, of Optical Coherence Tomography in

Europe with Eberhard Grube in 2004, of the

biodegradable Biotronik Magnesium stent with

Raimund Erbel in 2005, of retrograde

recanalization of Chronic Total Occlusions with

Osamu Katoh in 2005, of intracoronary

lithotripsy in 2015.

RESEARCH EXPERIENCE: Professor Di Mario

was an early advocate of the use of

intracoronary Doppler, pressure measurement,

intravascular ultrasound, optical coherence

tomography, and near infrared spectroscopy,

now all receiving Class I A indication for

guidance of PCI in the most recent ESC and

AHA/ACC Guidelines. He was PI of the

OPTICUS trial, European PI of the Lipid Rich

Plaque study, of the DESTINI trial, and of

the CARESS in AMI trial. He cooperated with

Dr Justin Davies to the validation of iFR to

assess lesion severity and discriminate the

contribution of individual lesions, and with Dr

Lyon in the intracoronary delivery of SERCA-2

genes via adenoviral vectors in the CUPID2

trial. He was the main recruiter of the

DISRUPT-I-CAD study and is PI of the

DISRUPT-II trial, both pioneering the use of

coronary lithotripsy for calcified coronary

lesions.PUBLICATIONS: H-index 118. He is Associate

Editor of International Journal of Cardiology,

EuroIntervention, Internal and Emergency

Medicine and European Heart Journal

Cardiovascular Imaging. He is Member of

the Editorial Board of Catheterization and

Cardiovascular Interventions, Journal of the

American College of Cardiology, JACC

Interventions, Circulation Interventions,

Journal of Cardiovascular Medicine (formerly

Italian Heart Journal), Cardiology, Journal of

Cardiovascular Revascularization Medicine

and the European Heart Journal and is

Associate/Section Editor of EuroIntervention

and EHJ Cardiovascular Imaging. He has

published 987 original papers, invited

editorials, case reports and review papers in

peer reviewed journals, has edited 7 books

and contributed chapters to more than 150

cardiology books including Topol’s Textbook

of Interventional Cardiology, the ESC

Textbook of Cardiology, CathSap 3 and 4 of

the ACC, the PCI-EAPCI Textbook of

Interventional Cardiology, the Braunwald

Heart Disease (ed 2014).

LECTURES: In the last 35 years he gave

more than 3000 lectures including the annual

congresses of the American College of

Cardiology, European Society of Cardiology,

Transcatheter Therapeutics (TCT), EuroPCR,

Cardiovascular Revascularization Therapy

(CRT) and many National Society (Japan,

Brazil, India, Singapore, Australia, Gulf

Association, Greece, Germany, Spain,

Netherlands, Hungary, Romania, Serbia,

Croatia, Argentina, Mexico, Belgium, British

Cardiac Society, Italian SIC and ANMCO)

and many Interventional National Societies

including the US Society of Cardiovascular

Angiography and Interventions (SCAI) where

he also served in the Board of Directors. He

gave Grand Rounds or Keynote lectures as

Visiting Professor in the Mayo Clinic,

Cleveland Clinic, Harvard Medical School in

Boston, Columbia University in New York,

Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Leuven

University, Copenhagen University, Galway

University among others. He was awarded the

Gruentzig lecture in Interventional Cardiology at

the European Society of Cardiology Congress

of Madrid 2025.

AFFILIATIONS: He served as President of

the European Association of Percutaneous

Cardiovascular Interventions between 2009

and 2011 and Councillor of the European

Society of Cardiology between 2012 and

2014. He has been a member of the Writing

Committee of many Guidelines Task Forces

of the ESC including sudden death,

percutaneous coronary angioplasty, STEMI,

Myocardial Revascularization, Stable Angina,

Non-cardiac Surgery and is first/last author or

coauthor of many Expert Consensus

documents (intravascular ultrasound, PCI in

non surgical centres, optical coherence

tomography, radial approach, renal

denervation, intravascular imaging, calcified

lesions, CTO, myocardial ischemia in

congenital heart disease). He is immediate

past President (2021-23) of the EuroCTO

Club and current President of the Tusco-

Umbrian Chapter of the Italian Society of

Cardiology.
