CHRISTOS J. MARKOPOULOS, MD, MPhil (UK), PhD, FEBS, CEBS
Breast Oncoplastic Surgeon – Em. Professor of Surgery at the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens - Greece and Director of the Breast Unit of the Athens Medical Center in Athens.
Prof. Markopoulos qualified from Athens University Medical School and specialized in GeneralSurgery. He holds a PhD from Athens University and an MPhil degree in Oncology–Breast Cancer fromUniversity of London - UK (1988). He worked as Senior Registrar at the Breast Unit of St. George’s and The Royal Marsden Hospitals inLondon (1985-1988) and as research fellow at the Ludwing Institute for Cancer Research at Sutton, UK.
He is the founder of the Hellenic Society of Breast Surgeons(2000), President (2000-2016) and head of the education, training and clinicaltrials sectionof the society.He was the President of the UEMS-EBS Division of Breast Surgery (2016-2024) and he has been an elected member of the EUSOMA Executive Committee and memberof several medical associations, including ABS, ACBS and ESSO.
Prof. Markopoulos is national coordinator / Primary Investigator in a number of international and national research projects and clinical trials and has publishedover 350 papers in peer-reviewed international and Greekmedical journals with 10,500 citations and a current h-index of 47 and i10-index of 146. He has authored (6) and edited (18) books on breastdisease and cancer, including the “European textbook of Breast Cancer management for Surgeons” (Springer-2018), official book of the EBSQ exams in Breast Surgery and the “Breast Cancer management for Surgeons – An Examination guide” (Springer-2024).
He is recipient of a number of scientific awards during congresses and honorary awards from advocacy and patients’ groups for his work with breast cancer patients.
