Graduated from United States Military Academy, West Point, 1979. Served 2 years in the Army Corps of Engineers. Airborne and Ranger qualified.


Attended medical School at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences graduating in 1985. Pathfinder qualified. Internship Walter Reed Army Medical Center 1985-1986. Deputy Director, Department of Surgery, Walter Reed Army Institute of Research 1986-1987. Orthopedic surgery resident Walter Reed Army Medical Center 1987-1991. Spine Surgery fellow University of Minnesota 1991-1992.


Chief of Spine Surgery Walter Reed Amry Medical Center 1992-2002. Chair Department of Orthopedic Surgery and Rehabilitation 2022-2003. Retired from US Army. Chief of Spine Surgery University of Minnesota 2003-2025. Professor Emeritus 2025. President Scoliosis Research Society 2015-2016. American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery Board of Councilors and Board of Specialty Societies. Board of Directors Minnesota Orthopedic Society ex officio (current).
