Short Biography

James is Professor of Medical Research with expertise in cardiovascular disease and blood pressure. He heads the Blood Pressure Research Group and is former Deputy Director (2017 - 2025) at the Menzies Institute for Medical Research. He is a member of the Menzies Cardiovascular Research Flagship which seeks to reduce the risk for cardiovascular disease and improve outcomes for people with cardiovascular disease in Tasmania (https://www.hypertension.org.au/).


James’s research program is dedicated to reducing blood pressure related premature death and disability. His research and translational activity to improve the accuracy of blood pressure devices and blood pressure measurement has had global reach with impact on awareness, policy and practice guidelines.

He is a board member of Hypertension Australia (https://www.hypertension.org.au/) which has a vision for Australians to have the best-managed blood pressure in the world. He is also a steering committee member of the National Hypertension Taskforce of Australia (https://www.hypertension.org.au/the-national-hypertension-taskforce/).
