RESEARCH

Prof. Jaw-Yuan Wang is an internationally recognized leader in gastrointestinal oncology clinical trials, ranking among the top-tier investigators in the Asia-Pacific region in terms of patient enrollment capacity, trial execution quality, and academic impact. He has consistently served as a global leading investigator, steering committee member, and advisory board advisor in multiple international multicenter clinical trials. He has contributed to several pivotal phase III studies published in The New England Journal of Medicine, including MATTERHORN (Durvalumab), DESTINY-Gastric04 (Trastuzumab Deruxtecan), and BREAKWATER (Encorafenib plus Cetuximab), all of which have had a substantial impact on current therapeutic strategies. His team demonstrates high patient enrollment, robust data quality management, and strict compliance with international regulatory standards (ICH-GCP, FDA, and EMA), making his institution a preferred partner for global pharmaceutical companies and academic research organizations. With more than 366 SCI-indexed publications, including high-impact work in Nature and NEJM, and extensive experience across Phase I–III clinical trials, Prof. Wang is widely recognized as a globally influential key opinion leader (KOL) and high-performing principal investigator in precision medicine, immunotherapy, and translational oncology.

Prof. Wang currently serves as Professor in the Department of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine, and the Graduate Institute of Clinical Medicine at Kaohsiung Medical University. From 2018 to 2020, he served as President of the Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, Taiwan. He also received advanced research training as a Research Fellow at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, USA. Previously, he served as the leader of the colorectal cancer multidisciplinary team (MDT) and Program Director of Robotic Surgery. Since 2023, he has been President of the Taiwan Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition.

Prof. Wang has been actively involved in numerous national and international professional societies, including the Taiwan Surgical Association, Taiwan Surgical Society of Gastroenterology, Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons of Taiwan, Taiwan Robotic Surgery Association, Taiwan Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, Taiwan Oncology Society, Clinical Oncology Society of Taiwan, Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition Society of Asia, American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract (SSAT), and the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO). He has also held key leadership roles in multiple organizations, including Executive Director of the Taiwan Surgical Association, Director of the Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons of Taiwan, Director of the Taiwan Surgical Society of Gastroenterology, and Executive Director of the Taiwan Gastric Cancer Association. Since 2020, he has been a member of the Global Reach Committee of the European Society of Coloproctology (ESCP).

Academically, Prof. Wang has published over 433 peer-reviewed articles, including 367 SCI-indexed papers, with 21 publications cited more than 100 times. His work has been published in leading journals such as Nature, The New England Journal of Medicine, and Gut. He has also contributed six book chapters and holds 12 patents across Taiwan, the United States, the European Union, Japan, and China.

Prof. Wang serves as an editor or guest editor for several international journals, including World Journal of Gastroenterology, Asian Journal of Surgery, Kaohsiung Journal of Medical Sciences, Cells, Oncology Letters, Oncology Research, Frontiers in Oncology, Journal of Oncology, and Cancers. In addition, he has been invited as a reviewer for more than 90 high-impact journals, including The Lancet Regional Health – Europe, Annals of Surgery, Gastroenterology, Cancer Research, Clinical Cancer Research, International Journal of Surgery, Journal of the American College of Surgeons, International Journal of Cancer, Diseases of the Colon and Rectum, Cancer Letters, Expert Review of Molecular Diagnostics, British Journal of Cancer, and Cancer Drug Resistance.

From 2012 to 2018, he served as Principal Investigator of the colorectal cancer biosignature project at Academia Sinica. Since 2019, he has been appointed as a committee member for clinical applications under the Taiwan Precision Medicine Initiative. Clinically, Prof. Wang is a pioneer in robotic colorectal surgery in Taiwan and was the first colorectal surgeon in the country to perform robotic procedures. To date, he has completed more than 850 robotic surgeries.

In recognition of his outstanding clinical and academic contributions, Prof. Wang and his team were awarded the Gold Medal of the Symbol of National Quality (SNQ) in 2023 for their Integrated Home Parenteral Nutrition Care Team. In 2025, his team received the Group Award at the 8th Baosheng Medical Dedication Awards, and Prof. Wang was individually honored with the Outstanding Physician Award in Medical Technology.
