Prof Johannes Ring has been active as director of the University Departments of Dermatology and Allergology in Hamburg (1990-1995) and Munich (1995-2014), where he also was Dean of Studies for 10 years. As prof emeritus he is still active in private office in Munich and Davos, also in translational research on barrier surfaces.


His focus are allergic and inflammatory skin diseases, eczema, anaphylaxis, new diagnostics and therapies as well as role of environmental influences. He is involved in international guidelines as well as educational programs in allergy, namely atopic eczema and anaphylaxis.


He was/is in the board or president of several international societies in Dermatology and Allergy, eg European Academy Dermatology Venereology (EADV), European Dermatology Forum (EDF), World Allergy Organization (WAO), Collegium Internationale Allergologicaum (CIA), founding president of International Society of Atopic Dermatitis (ISAD).

He was co-founder and director of the Christine Kuehne Center for Allergy Research and Education CK-CARE in Davos, Switzerland.

He has been Editor-in-Chief of “Allergo-Journal”, “World Allergy Organization (WAO) Journal” and the “Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology” (JEADV).


He has published > 600 articles (originals and reviews) and written/edited > 25 books, recently “Atopic Dermatitis/Eczema” (2023, together with K Eyerich).


His work found > 70 000 citations

Besides medicine he is interested in history and has written and produced several musicals illustrating problems of allergy in research and patient care.
