Jaime Uribarri

Dr. Jaime Uribarri is a practicing nephrologist and clinical investigator in NYC. He received his M.D. degree from The University of Chile Medical School and done all his post graduate education in the US. He has been in The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, NYC, since 1990, where he is currently Professor of Medicine and Director of the Renal Clinic and the Home Dialysis Program at the Mount Sinai Hospital. In parallel with his clinical activities, Dr Uribarri has been very active in clinical investigation for more than 40 years. His main areas of research have been on acid-base and fluid and electrolytes disorders as well as nutrition in chronic kidney disease and diabetic patients. He has published well over 200 peer-reviewed papers and written many chapters in books. He has lectured extensively on these research topics in New York City as well as in national and international meetings. An important area of his research has been in the field of dietary advanced glycation end products (dAGEs) and their effects in human Health and Disease. Initially working with Dr. Helen Vlassara he developed a collaborative team that defined the role of dAGEs in a variety of chronic diseases, including diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease and dementia. This team published the first database with the AGE content of a large number of food items and established the basis for most of the research in this field through several seminal publications describing clinical trials of an AGE-restricted diet on oxidative stress and inflammation in a variety of pathological conditions. He has also collaborated with a large group of investigators in this field not only from the USA, but also from Europe and Latin America. He was one of the founders of the Ibero American Network of researchers working on AGEs and their effects on Health and Disease (RIAS) that meets every two years for a 3-day symposium dealing with the subject. He has edited a book on dietary AGEs and co-edited a book on dietary phosphorus published by the CRC Press and another one on Nutrition, Fitness and Mindfulness published by Humana Press. He serves as an ad hoc referee for numerous nutrition, medical and other scientific journals and he is an active member of several health organizations and professional national and international associations.
