Dr. Tovar-y-Romo is a neuroscientist whose research focuses on the molecular and cellular mechanisms that govern damage and recovery after central nervous system injury. His work centers on ischemic stroke and neurovascular disease, with particular emphasis on extracellular vesicle signaling, mechanosensitive pathways such as Piezo1, and the molecular programs that regulate neuronal survival, vascular responses, and neural repair. His laboratory integrates molecular neuroscience, vascular biology, and translational approaches to understand how intercellular signaling and mechanotransduction shape tissue responses to ischemia. By combining experimental models with systems-level analyses, his research seeks to identify biomarkers and therapeutic targets that may enhance recovery after stroke and other neurological injuries. Dr. Tovar-y-Romo is the Director of the Instituto de Fisiología Celular at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), one of Latin America’s leading centers for basic biomedical research. In this role, he promotes interdisciplinary collaboration across neuroscience, cell biology, and physiology, while advancing institutional initiatives that expand research infrastructure, international partnerships, and training opportunities for the next generation of scientists. In parallel with his leadership responsibilities, he continues to lead an active research program and mentor graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.
