Short Biography
Dr. Geffner is Professor Emeritus of Pediatrics at the Keck School of Medicine of USC, and the Ron Burkle Chair in the Center for Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism at CHLA. He is the former Chief of the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism at both UCLA and Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA). He graduated from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine (1975), was a house officer at LAC-USC Medical Center (1975-1979), and completed his fellowship in Pediatric Endocrinology at UCLA (1979-1982). His current research interests are in the areas of the natural history, complications, and new treatments of congenital adrenal hyperplasia; the endocrinological/metabolic manifestations of HIV infection and its treatment in childhood; and new formulations, delivery systems, and indications for GH and GnRH agonist therapy. Dr. Geffner was the principal investigator at CHLA for 15 years of the NIH-sponsored TODAY2 trial aimed at studying long-term outcomes of youth with T2DM and is the national endocrinology consultant to the NIH-sponsored HIV PHACS study. He co-directs the Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH) Center of Medical and Surgical Excellence at CHLA and the new Adult Women’s Turner Syndrome Clinic at Keck-USC Medical Center. Dr. Geffner is a Past-President of the Pediatric Endocrine Society (2014-2015) and its past Secretary (2018-2022). He also served on the American Board of Pediatrics Sub-Board on Pediatric Endocrinology and is currently an advisor to the MAGIC Foundation, the Pituitary Network Association, and CARES Foundation. He is the author of 200 peer-reviewed publications, pediatric endocrinology co-editor for UpToDate, and co-editor of the textbook, “Pediatric Endocrinology: Principles and Practice” (McGraw-Hill). Dr. Geffner was the 2022 recipient of the International Outstanding Clinician Award, 2022 (European Society of Paediatric Endocrinology).
