Motomu Hashimoto

Trained under Prof. Shimon Sakaguchi, the 2025 Nobel Laureate recognized for the discovery of regulatory T cells, Prof. Motomu Hashimoto has advanced pioneering research bridging basic and clinical immunology. His work using a monogenic autoimmune mouse model has elucidated mechanisms through which genetic and environmental factors determine disease phenotypes—including rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and spondyloarthritis. In clinical research, Prof. Hashimoto established the ANSWER cohort, Japan’s largest rheumatoid arthritis registry, generating real-world evidence that informs the optimal use of molecular targeted therapies. His major contributions integrating bench and bedside research were honored with the 2025 Japan College of Rheumatology Scientific Award.
