Biographical Sketch

Professor Patrizio Lancellotti has followed an atypical academic path. He completed his secondary studies in applied chemistry at the “Université du Travail Paul Pastur” before pursuing medical studies. He earned his MD degree in 1995 from the University of Liège, followed by a specialization in cardiology and additional training in intensive care medicine, granting him the title of intensive care cardiologist in 2001. He defended a PhD thesis in 2002 and later completed his habilitation (aggregation) on dynamic mitral regurgitation in 2005.

In 2002, he was appointed Director of the Echocardiography Laboratory, and in 2010, he co-founded one of the first dedicated heart valve clinics in Europe. Since 2017, he has led the Department of Cardiology at the University Hospital of Liège, where he teaches cardiovascular medicine and rehabilitation to medical and physical therapy students.

Professor Lancellotti is a member of multiple editorial boards and currently serves as Associate Editor of European Heart Journal - Open, European Heart Journal – Cardiovascular Imaging, EuroIntervention, and Revue Médicale de Liège. He is Editor-in-Chief of Acta Cardiologica. As a highly prolific clinician-scientist, he has authored over 900 peer-reviewed articles and presented more than 250 scientific communications at national and international meetings. He has obtained major research grants, including ERC (Starting and PoC), FEDER, and Interreg funding, while maintaining an active clinical and academic career.

He has supervised more than 10 PhD candidates in both clinical and basic cardiovascular research and served as jury member for numerous dissertations in Belgium and abroad. He has also co-edited several reference books in cardio-oncology, echocardiography, multimodal imaging, and valvular heart disease. He was ranked among the world’s top 1% most cited researchers in 2018, 2019, and 2023 (Clarivate, Web of Science).

Professor Lancellotti is Past-President of the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging (EACVI), the European Council on Valvular Heart Disease, and the Belgian Society of Cardiology.
