Short Biography
Pavla Jendelova is a Head of the Department of Neuroregeneration at the Institute of Experimental Medicine, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. Her Lab. studies stem cell neurodifferentiation, neuroinflammation, cell and gene therapy for the treatment of stroke, spinal cord injury and neurodegenerative diseases (AD). Her group has long lasting collaboration with the Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry on developing biomaterials for CNS injury for combined therapies and theranostic magnetic nanoparticles for cell labeling and drug delivery. In 2017-2023 she was running with James Fawcett from Cambridge University a Center for Reconstructive Neuroscience (NeuroRecon), with the focus on nervous tissue regeneration and plasticity using viral vector gene delivery and extracellular matrix manipulations. Recently she is coordinating project “Excellence in Regenerative Medicine” focused on restoring tissues that we cannot treat or that have limited regenerative capacity. This involve damage to the nervous tissue of the brain and spinal cord, including the problem of neurodegeneration and retinal degeneration, tissue engineering of small-diameter blood vessels, and the active healing of chronic wounds and osteochondral defects. The research involves all levels, starting from the sub-cellular level through the cellular, tissue level, and ending with animal testing and preclinical studies in large animals.
