Short Biography
Prof. Roshanak Ghods is an Associate Professor in the Department of Persian Medicine at the Iran University of Medical Sciences (IUMS) in Tehran, Iran. She obtained her Medical Doctorate (MD) from Rafsanjan University of Medical Sciences in 2001 and her Ph.D. in Persian Medicine from IUMS in 2014.
Throughout her career, Prof. Ghods has demonstrated significant scientific and managerial leadership. She served as the Dean and Founder of the School of Traditional Medicine at IUMS from 2015 to 2017 and as the President of the Research Institute for Islamic and Complementary Medicine. She has been a member of the Iranian Academy of Science, Hikmat, Islamic, and Traditional Medicine group since 2015. Complementing her medical expertise, she completed an intensive MBA course in 2018 and a 433-hour training course in Acupuncture in 2021.
Prof. Ghods was recognized as a top academic member of IUMS during the 2nd Internationalization Festival in July 2024 and was selected for the Research Festival in the impactful projects section in November 2024. Her research interests include Persian Medicine, cardiovascular diseases (specifically hypertension), diabetes, wet cupping, leech therapy, and the design of standard diagnostic equipment such as pulse-taking and urine index devices. She authored the comprehensive Clinical Guideline for Diagnosis and Treatment of Hypertension in Persian Medicine, which was selected as the top book at the 3rd Persian Medicine Festival by the Ministry of Health in 2023. Furthermore, she became an Associate Member of the International Society of Hypertension (ISH) in May 2024.
On the international stage, Prof. Ghods continues to hold prominent advisory roles. Following her tenure as an External Advisory Group member for the first WHO Traditional Medicine Summit (2023–2024), she currently serves as a member of the WHO Strategic and Technical Advisory Group on Traditional, Complementary, and Integrative Medicine (Sep 2025–Sep 2027). Additionally, she is a member of the Expert Editorial Committee (EEC) for the WHO Traditional Medicine Global Research Priority Setting Exercise and serves on the expert team for drafting the WHO technical brief on "Mapping the application of artificial intelligence in traditional medicine".
