Short Biography

My research has included the generation, adoption, and application of evidence in oxygenation interventions and Rapid Response Systems to address acute physiologic deterioration using informatics and extends across the continuum to critical illness recovery. I design and test care transition interventions for critical illness recovery after hospital discharge to innovate healthcare delivery models and improve outcomes. For example, long-term ICU-acquired cognitive dysfunction is prevalent in roughly half of ICU survivors. ICU-acquired disabilities can affect resumption of pre-critical illness activities, including driving. Driving decisions for patients with these new onset disabilities are subjective decisions at the discretion of the driver, and/or their family and clinicians. My research to develop objective indicators of these effects is funded by the NIH/NIA to test the deployment of high-fidelity kinematic sensors in vehicles to conduct patient-centered assessments specific to driving-related functional outcomes after critical illness.
