Doctor Edina Cenko is a clinical cardiology researcher at the University of Bologna. She completed both her MD and PhD at the University of Bologna. Her research is centered on the pathophysiological, therapeutical and prognostic aspects of ischemic heart disease, risk stratification, and sex and gender differences in cardiovascular disease. Dr. Cenko has participated as an investigator in several clinical research projects and registries that focus on risk factors, prevention, epidemiology, evaluation, therapy, quality of care, and outcomes of chronic and acute coronary syndromes. Her scholarly work has been published in highly qualified international journals, including The Lancet, European Heart Journal, JAMA Internal Medicine, and the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. Additionally, Dr. Cenko has contributed to multiple research studies that have significant implications for understanding sex and gender differences in ischemic heart disease outcomes, underscoring her commitment to advancing the field of cardiovascular medicine, particularly in understanding the complex interactions between sex and gender and their impact on ischemic heart disease. Dr. Cenko holds roles in various research committees and collaborations. Notably, she is involved with the International Survey of Acute Coronary Syndromes (ISACS), is a member of the ACS/PCI Working Group for the ESC-EuroHeart Data Standards for Cardiovascular Outcomes registry and serves as a member and secretary of The Lancet Regional Health-Europe Commission on Inequalities and Disparities in Cardiovascular Health. Dr. Cenko is also a member of the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Collaborator Network and was selected for the CVCT Future Trialists (CVCT-FT) Fellowship by the Global CardioVascular Clinical Trialists (CVCT) Forum. Additionally, she reviews for leading journals such as The Lancet, European Heart Journal, Circulation, and Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC). She currently serves as Chairperson of the ESC Working Group on Coronary Pathophysiology and Microcirculation. Dr. Cenko is a Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology (FESC), a Member of the Italian Society of Cardiology (SIC)/Italian Federation of Cardiology (FIC) and a Member of the American Heart Association- Council on Quality of Care and Outcomes Research (QCOR).
Her contributions to cardiovascular research have been widely recognized. She received the “Diploma of Excellence” award from the Romanian Society of Hypertension in 2014 and the “Best Publication Award” from the Italian Society of Cardiology in 2019. Her work was featured in the Italian Society of Cardiology’s "Highlights Young Researchers" section in 2017 and 2018. Additionally, she was awarded the European Society of Cardiology’s “Best Poster Award” for ACS-STEMI in 2017 and Gender Differences in Acute Coronary Syndromes in 2018.
