Fausto J Pinto

Professor Fausto J Pinto received his MD and PhD from the Lisbon University Medical School and completed fellowships at Santa Maria University Hospital (Lisbon, Portugal) and Stanford University Medical School (CA, USA), where he was also a Clinical Attending in the Echocardiography laboratory.

As a Full Professor of Cardiology/Medicine, Professor Pinto has demonstrated his leadership abilities by serving as the Head of the Cardiovascular Department of Santa Maria University Hospital and President of the Cardiovascular Center of the University of Lisbon (CCUL). He was Dean of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon (2015-22), national Coordinator of the Medical Schools Council (2018-2020), and President of the Executive Board of the Lisbon Academic Medical Centre (2019-21).

Professor Pinto was the President and founder of the European Association of Echocardiography (2003-2004), President of the European Society of Cardiology (2014-2016) and President of the World Heart Federation (2021-22). He is currently Board Member of NCD Alliance and co-chair of the Guidelines Advisory Board (GAB) of the iCardio Alliance. He is a Fellow and Gold Medal of the European Society of Cardiology (FESC), European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging (FEACVI), American College of Cardiology (FACC), American Society of Angiology (FASA) , Society for Cardiac Angiography and Interventions (FSCAI) and the American Society of Echocardiography (FASE) and honorary member of several international societies and academies: Academia de Medicina do Brasil, Academia de Medicina da Bahia (Brasil), Academia de Medicina de Mato Grosso (Brasil), American Society of Echocardiography, Sociedad Colombiana de Cardiologia, Czech Cardiology Society, Societé Française de Cardiologie, Hungarian Society of Cardiology, Societá Italiana de Ecografia Cardiovascular, Japanese Circulation Society, Maltese Society of Cardiology, Peruvian Society of Cardiology, Portuguese Society of Health Literacy,Romanian Society of Cardiology, Romanian Academy of Medical Sciences, Russian Society of Cardiology, Slovakian Society of Cardiology. Full Member (Chair XXXV) of Portuguese Medical Academy (Academia de Medicina Portuguesa-Cadeira XXXV). Prof. Pinto has published over 800 papers and presented over 3000 lectures around the globe. He was the Editor in Chief of the Portuguese Journal of Cardiology and is currently a Consulting Editor and Member of the Advisory and Editorial Board of several peer-reviewed journals. His main areas of interest, including global health, digital health, ischemic heart disease, heart failure, anticoagulation, and cardiovascular imaging, are well-documented in his publications, with a particular focus on the use of ultrasound in cardiology and the pioneering use of intravascular ultrasound in the study of graft atherosclerosis.
