Shane W Kraus

Shane W. Kraus, Ph.D., is an associate professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. His research focuses on psychopathology, addictive behaviors, and co-occurring psychiatric disorders, with particular emphasis on substance use disorders, gambling disorder, compulsive sexual behavior disorder (CSBD), and related mental health concerns. Using behavioral, epidemiological, clinical, and neurobiological approaches, Kraus investigates factors that contribute to the development, maintenance, and treatment of addictive behaviors among high-risk populations, including U.S. military veterans and young adults.

A major focus of Kraus's current research examines sports betting and gambling-related harms. His work seeks to identify risk and protective factors associated with problematic gambling behaviors, evaluate the public health impact of expanded gambling opportunities, and inform prevention, intervention, and policy efforts aimed at reducing gambling-related harms in diverse populations.

Kraus earned his doctoral degree in clinical psychology, with an emphasis in community psychology, from Bowling Green State University in 2013. He completed his predoctoral psychology internship at the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System and subsequently completed an Advanced Fellowship in Mental Illness Research and Treatment at the VISN 1 New England Mental Illness Research, Education, and Clinical Center (MIRECC), VA Connecticut Healthcare System, and Yale School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry, in 2015.
