Stuart is Professor of Physical Activity and Health at the University of Southern Queensland, near Brisbane, Australia. He was Professor Loughborough University, UK, from 1998-2014 and Professor of Active Living and Public Health at Victoria University, Melbourne, Australia, 2014-17. He was Head of the then School of Sport and Exercise Sciences at Loughborough between 2001-2007 and is now Visiting Professor to Loughborough University, having been affiliated with Loughborough since arriving as a student in 1973.

Stuart holds honorary positions at The University of Queensland, Baker Heart & Diabetes Institute (Melbourne) and University of Jyväskylä, Finland. He is ranked in the top 20 all-time worldwide for career-long citation impact in sport sciences, is a Clarivate Highly Cited researcher, and is world-ranked 33^rd in Public Health and 148^th in Psychology for citations.

Stuart’s current research interests centre on sedentary behaviour and physical activity correlates and behaviour change strategies, as well as mental health outcomes. He has been senior author of the book Psychology of Physical Activity for over 30 years, with the 4^th edition published by Routledge in 2021. He has been involved in the production of physical activity and sedentary behaviour guidelines for Australia, Canada, UK, and for the World Health Organization. Stuart has Honorary Doctorates from the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences and the University of Thessaly, Greece.
