Short Biography
Dr. Jair de Jesus Mari graduated from ABC Medical College in 1977 and completed his residency in Psychiatry at the Hospital do Servidor Público Estadual, São Paulo State. Following his residency, he worked at the Department of Social Medicine at the College of Medical Sciences of Santa Casa in São Paulo City. From October 1981 to March 1986, he defended his Ph.D. His doctoral research focused on Mental Disorders in Primary Health Care Facilities at the Institute of Psychiatry at the University of London under the guidance of Professor Michael Shepherd. The study emphasized Psychiatric Epidemiology and the Applications of Epidemiological Methods in Psychiatry. In 1987, the Psychiatry Department of São Paulo Federal University recruited him. In 1991, he pursued his post-doctoral project at McMaster University in Hamilton, Canada, concentrating on enhancing several areas including Clinical Epidemiology, Systematic Review Studies and Meta-analysis, Transcultural Psychiatry, Schizophrenia, Violence and Trauma, and Scientometrics. He returned to Brazil in 1992 and attained the position of Full Tenure Professor at Paulista Medical College in June 1996. Since his tenure in London, he has authored over 450 scientific papers and has supervised numerous doctoral and post-doctoral students both domestically and internationally. He is recognized as a leading researcher by the National Research Council of Brazil (CNPq), with research spanning Psychiatric Epidemiology, Systematic Reviews, Sociocultural Factors in the Course of Schizophrenia, Health Services Evaluation, Violence and Mental Health, and Evaluation of Therapeutic Interventions in Psychiatry.
