Short Biography

I'm a Professor at the Medical School of the Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP), focused on how genome structure and its epigenetic marks drives human disease and evolution. My work sits at the intersection of molecular biology and large-scale data (bioinformatics), translating complex genomic signals into biological insight.

My main academic distinctions are:

• International Research Scholar of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (USA)

• Life Fellow of the Galton Institute (Adelphi Genetics Forum, UK)

• Member of the São Paulo State Academy of Sciences (Brazil)

• Recipient of the Medal of Merit in Science and Technology, Government of São Paulo State (Brazil)

Key scientific contributions are:

• First direct sequencing of viral RNA genomes and epigenomes in Brazil

• Discovery of Neanderthal-associated viruses

• Proposed the paleobiogeographical evolution of Trypanosoma cruzi (Chagas disease)

• Contributor to landmark projects (Xylella genome, cancer transcriptome, epileptic brain)

Current focus of my research:

• RNA epigenetics (viral and human)

• Mitochondrial genomics and neurological disease

• Paleovirology in ancient humans
